MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After three straight wins in the early going this season, the Middle Tennessee bats went quiet Friday night as they suffered a 9-1 defeat against Army West Point.
Nate Hoffmann drew the start and ate up five innings for the Blue Raiders. The senior righty gave up six hits but limited Army to just two runs and struck out four batters with no walks.
"Nate [Hoffmann] still isn't where I think he can be and where we saw him last year, but he competed well," head coach Jim McGuire said. "He ended up getting us five innings and it was just 2-0 when he came out of the game so we were right there with his start even though he might not have been at his best."
Riley Delgado put together a nice day at the plate for the Raiders. The junior shortstop went 2-for-3 and drew two walks.
Army opened the scoring in the top of the first when the leadoff hitter singled, stole second and was doubled home.
Will Schnure made his first start of the season behind the plate and got in on the action early. The junior backstop threw a runner out trying to steal third for the second out of the first inning to help Hoffmann out of a jam.
Army struck for another run in the third frame. A hit by pitch followed by a wild pitch put the Black Knight runner on second before a double to left-center field chased him home.
Middle Tennessee threatened in the bottom of the third but a pair of strikeouts got Army out of the inning. The Raiders got runners to first and third again in the fifth but couldn't deliver a hit in the clutch moment.
Sam Alton came on to replace Hoffmann in the top of the sixth but struggled through two-thirds of an inning. Army tacked on two runs to make the score 4-0 before Caleb Smith came out of the bullpen and close out the sixth.
Smith pitched 2-1/3 innings without allowing a hit but the Blue Raider bats failed to provide any run support until the bottom of the eighth.
Kevin Dupree led off the bottom half of the eighth with a line drive single to right before Norrell doubled down the right field line to move Dupree to third. Two batters later Vaughn Shapen drove Dupree in on a ground out to shortstop to get the Blue Raiders on the board.
Andy Wright came out of the bullpen to start off the ninth inning, but struggled from the start as he walked the first batter he faced. Wright allowed three runs before Will Jackson came on to relieve Wright after only one-third of an inning.
Two more runs were credited to Wright in the ninth after Jackson took over, but the junior got a K to get out of the inning.
Drew Huff led off the ninth with a pinch-hit walk and Delgado followed him with another walk, but the Blue Raiders failed to produce despite having two on with no one out.
Middle Tennessee hosts Western Michigan tomorrow in game two of the Mule Mix Classic. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. at Reese Smith, Jr. Field.
