MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The bottom of Middle Tennessee's order came up big as it paved the way for the Blue Raiders' 8-2 win against Memphis in front of 706 at Reese Smith Jr., Field Tuesday.
The seven-through-nine hitters in Middle Tennessee's order were a combined 5-for-11 with four runs scored, three RBI and one double, led by sophomore standout Kevin Sullivan, who was 2-for-4 with two run scored batting eighth.
Left fielder Kaleb King was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and a double, batting seventh, and junior catcher Chaz Vesser continued to deliver at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one RBI. Freshman standout Blake Benefield continued his recent hitting binge, going 2-for-3 with his first career home run, two runs scored and one RBI.
Junior shortstop Riley Delgado extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a third-inning double.
Jake Wyrick (2-1) earned the win with five innings of three-hit baseball. The lefty struck out three in five innings of work. Freshman A.J. Spencer earned his second save with four innings of solid relief work. He scattered three hits, allowed one, struck out three and walked none.
Middle Tennessee (7-5) took a 1-0 lead on Benefield's solo blast in the bottom of the second. After Memphis (5-4) tied the game with one run in the top of the fourth, Middle Tennessee came back and took the lead for good with a two-spot in the bottom of the fourth.
The Blue Raiders broke the game open with four in the bottom of the seventh.
The two teams will conclude their two-game series in Jackson, Tenn., Wednesday at 6:05 p.m.
