MT drops 6-5 decision to Bruins
Morgan Harris led the Raiders as she went 2-for-3 in the game and earned a walk as Carlie Jenkins hit her fourth homer of the season. But it was not enough as MT starter Megan Chocallo allowed three runs on three hits in 1.0 inning of work and bullpen extraordinaire Patty Taylor gave up three more on five hits in 6.0 innings of relief.
Belmont got going early as Chelsea Deloney hit a two-run homer in the first to take a 2-0 lead after just half an inning. The second began just a quickly for the Bruins as Jordan Spicer led off the inning with her first round tripper of the season and just like that it was 3-0 Belmont after the top of the second.
In the bottom of the second the Raiders put runners on the corners with two outs. Kristen Uselton reached on an error that allowed Megan Griffith to score and MT was on the board, down 3-1.
The Bruins went deep again in the third as Jess Andree hit a three run shot to left field with two outs. Belmont increased their lead to 6-1, but the comeback kids from the 'Boro were just getting started.
Precious Birdsong tripled to begin the bottom of the third. Peyton Grove followed by executed a squeeze bunt to bring Birdsong home and the Raiders were on the board again, down 6-2.
After a scoreless fourth, Austyn Whaley doubled home Griffith with one out. Jenkins followed with her a fourth long ball of the season, a two-run shot that cut the Belmont lead to one at 6-5. The Raiders then loaded the bases after the homer, but Grove struck out to end the inning.
In the sixth MT got a runner to third, but again failed to score the tying run. Belmont earned the win 6-5 and the Raiders losing streak hit its longest of the season at five games.
The Raiders will be back in action for their final home series of the season this weekend. MT welcomes Charlotte to Murfreesboro in a pivotal Conference USA series that will most likely determine who makes the conference tournament field of eight. Saturday's double header begins at 2 p.m. and Sunday's Senior Day game is scheduled to begin at noon.
