Box Score
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee received stellar starting pitching for the third straight game of its series against Rice, but the bats couldn't muster enough offense in a 6-2 setback against the visiting Owls Sunday.
Rice (17-10, 7-2) battled back to win the series after dropping the opener Friday. The Blue Raiders (13-15, 2-7) managed just two runs in the final two games against Rice pitching. The series was tied 1-1 going into Sunday's rubber game although Middle Tennessee's pitchers had allowed just one run in the first two games.
"Our starting pitching was exceptional this weekend and Cody Puckett was also really good out of the bullpen Saturday," Blue Raider Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "We felt like we had a good plan of how to pitch their hitters and our pitcher's really executed the plan. You have to tip your cap to Rice's pitchers, too, as they matched up throughout the weekend.
"Hitting is contagious. We just need for someone to get hot and kind of light a spark for us."
Riley Delgado led Middle Tennessee's seven-hit attack Sunday. He was 2-for-5 with a double and one run scored. Will Schnure was 2-for-3. Freshmen Austin Dennis and Drew Huff had Middle Tennessee's two RBI.
Starting pitcher Jake Wyrick had allowed just two unearned runs through five innings against Rice Sunday. He left the game trailing 3-0 in the sixth despite holding the Owls to five hits and striking out six.
"Jake was really sharp today and had his pitches working," McGuire said. "He stayed ahead in the count for the most part."
Rice scored two unearned runs in the third. The score remained 2-0 until Rice tacked on three in the sixth.
The Blue Raiders would add single runs in the sixth and eighth, but they could not sustain enough offense to put together a rally. They had the bases loaded with less than two outs in the sixth and eighth innings but managed just one run in those situations.
Middle Tennessee will return to action when it plays host to Austin Peay Tuesday. First pitch is 6 p.m.
