Cardiac Raiders prove resilience as they split extra inning double header
BOWLING GREEN, KY. – Middle Tennessee (20-18, 5-6) earned a dramatic split at WKU (13-19, 5-6) as they won the first game 4-3 in eight innings before dropping game two 4-3 in nine innings.
In game one the Raiders trailed 3-0 and could not get much going against Lady Topper starter Kathryn Downing. But with two outs in the seventh Payton Grove reached on an error at second base, Morgan Harris walked, and Dani Munoz reached on another error to load the bases. Austyn Whaley followed with a bases clearing double and the game was tied 3-3.
WKU showed they did not want extra innings as they loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. But Kelci Cheney buckled down and got Brooke Holloway to ground out to a fielder's choice that got the lead runner at home. Then Cheney struck out Kelsey Jernigan to end the inning and force extras.
In the top of the eighth after a tough game at the plate, Precious Birdsong earned an infield hit. Birdsong then stole second and Payton Grove walked to put runners on first and second with only one out. After Morgan Harris flied out, Dani Munoz stepped to the plate and ripped a single up the middle to score Birdsong with the game winning run.
Kelci Cheney (14-9) pitched the complete 8.0 innings to earn her 14th win on the season. Cheney allowed just three runs on 10 hits and struck out four during the game.
WKU got the scoring started early as Kelsey McGuffin hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first with one out to give the Lady Toppers a 1-0 lead. The second inning was lucrative for WKU as well as Carleigh Chaumont scored on a Taylor Proctor groundout to increase the lead to 2-0.
Brooke Holloway hit another one out homer for WKU in the third, this time an opposite field shot, and the Lady Toppers lead increased the lead to 3-0.
The Raiders proved to be cardiac kids again in the second game of the double header as they were down two with three outs to go.
Carlie Jenkins led off the seventh with a walk, Deja Portillo followed by reaching on an error and Kristen Uselton reached on another error that allowed Jenkins to score. After WKU retired the next two batters, Grove singled to center to bring home Portillo and MT had come from behind to tie the game 3-3.
As the game moved to extra innings, WKU worked around a Raider single in the top of the eighth. In the bottom half, with one out and a runner on first, Bryce Holmgren lined a ball to Uselton at third. The ball bounced off Uselton's glove, was caught out of the air by Grove at short, and MT doubled off Proctor at first for the 5-6-3 double play that moved the game into the ninth.
Middle Tennessee moved runners to second and third but could not score in the top of the inning. That paved the way for McGuffin to step to the plate and put an end to things with a walk-off homer to give WKU the 4-3 win.
Pattie Taylor (3-4), who pitched great in relief, took the tough-luck loss. Taylor allowed just two runs on five hits in 4.2 innings. Megan Chocallo started the game and received a no-decision as she went 3.1 and allowed two runs on eight hits.
Middle Tennessee took the first lead in game two as Uselton grounded out with runners on second and third. Whaley scored the game's first run and MT was up 1-0 after just an inning and a half.
The lead was short lived, however, as WKU got a run back in the bottom of the second. Lexie Norfleet and Kayla Baker led off the inning with back-to-back doubles off Chocallo and the Lady Toppers tied the game 1-1.
In the fourth WKU strung together four one-out singles to add a run. Proctor singled to bring home Baker and the Lady Toppers had their first lead of the game 2-1. Two innings later Holmgren earned a two out base hit in the sixth to score Downing and the Lady Toppers had a 3-1 lead heading into the seventh.
The rubber game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at noon at WKU Softball Complex.
