MT preps for VCU Invitational
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Seeking to grab back-to-back wins for the first time this season, Middle Tennessee couldn't quite get the offense in tune as the Wake Forest Demon Deacons took the match 3-0 Wednesday night.
Delaney Gallagher led the Raiders offensively with six kills and helped out defensively with a pair of assisted blocks.
MT came out firing in set one and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. A block by Gallagher and Jacqueline Lux kept the momentum rolling before Wake Forest answered. The Deacons forced a pair of errors and built a 9-6 advantage. MT rallied with a Bailey Mason kill and forced a pair of errors of their own to trim the lead to 12-11. Wake Forest silenced the run and jumped out to its largest lead at 17-11. MT maintained pace and climbed within striking distance, but the Deacons closed the set on a 3-1 run to win 25-20.
In the second set, Middle Tennessee struggled to find its offense. Wake Forest jumped out to a 3-0 lead to keep its momentum rolling. The Deacons maintained their offensive surge as they hit .467 in the set. Wake Forest also forced 11 Raider errors en route to a 23-13 set win.
Out of the intermission, Wake Forest opened the final frame with a 6-2 lead and didn't look back. Multiple runs kept the Deacons in front throughout the set and gave Wake Forest a 25-10 win to claim the match.
The Demon Deacons were paced by Caroline Rassenfoss with 16 kills and hit at a .636 clip. For the match, Wake Forest hit at a .370 attack percentage.
"I think there were some things we did well. We serve-received our best by numbers of any match this year. That's encouraging. We've put in a lot of work the last few days in practice and really improved," assistant coach Jeff Huebner said. "We took big swings. We got blocked a little bit, but it's encouraging to see the kids take big swings and have their teammates behind them and help them out."
Huebner filled in during tonight's match as head coach Dan Ahiers did not accompany the team to tend to a personal family matter.
MT has a quick turnaround as the team will travel to Richmond, Va. for the VCU Invitational. The Blue Raiders open the tournament with a double header Friday against Morgan State at 10 a.m. CT and VCU at 6 p.m. CT. MT will finish the weekend with a matchup against Liberty Saturday at 9 a.m. CT.
