MT seeks to bounce back against WKU
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Seeking to gain momentum in the early portion of the conference schedule, Middle Tennessee displayed flashes of offense, but dropped a three-set match to Rice Friday night.
Eight Blue Raiders tallied a kill with freshman Dora Peonia leading the way with nine kills and hit for a team-best .316.
The Blue Raiders jumped in front 5-2 during the first set behind an ace by Aubrie Huddleston and blocks by Bailey Mason and Delaney Gallagher. Rice responded offensively with a pair of kills from Shelby Livingstone and Grace Morgan to tie the set 6-6. The Raiders and Owls traded points with Rice claiming a 12-10 advantage. From there, the Owls took a commanding lead and used a 13-4 run to win the first frame 25-14.
The Owls carried the momentum from the first set to quickly gain a 4-1 lead in the second. The Raiders responded behind kills from Peonia, Makila York and Regan Coughlin, but Rice silenced the MT run and extended the lead to 14-9. The Blue Raiders offered another rally with a kill, block and an ace from Sabrie Sirmones to trim the deficit to 17-15. Rice's Stephanie Mendivil put the Owls back in control with a kill that sparked a 6-2 run and allowed Rice to claim the second set 25-19.
Out of the intermission, Rice claimed an 8-3 lead in the third set and never looked back. MT claimed a pair of runs to threaten the Owls, but, highlighted by a 10-2 run, Rice surged to a 25-14 win in the third set to take the match.
Defensively, Rice forced 15 Blue Raider errors in the final two sets and tallied nine total team blocks.
The Blue Raiders seek to bounce back in the weekend finale against WKU. Sunday's first serve from AMG is slated for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on beIN Sports Connect.
