MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee is back in action and looking to open conference play 9-0 for just the second time in school history Saturday as it hosts the Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech.
The Blue Raiders and Bulldogs have met 13 times previously with LA Tech holding a distinct edge in the series, holding and 11-2 advantage. Middle Tennessee is winless in four attempts in the series since joining Conference USA.
MT (18-3, 8-0) remained perfect in conference play with a 72-56 downing of Southern Miss Thursday night behind excellent guard play.
Freshman Tyrik Dixon, who has been a hot hand in January and solidified himself as a trusty fourth scoring option for the Blue Raiders, poured in a career-high 21 points against the Golden Eagles on 9-of-12 shooting. Junior Giddy Potts added 19 points and eight boards in the contest.
JaCorey Williams continues to lead Middle in scoring at 17.2 points per game despite being held to four points Thursday as Southern Miss slammed the paint full of defenders in a concerted effort to slow him and Reggie Upshaw. Upshaw finished the night with 12 points and seven boards and is averaging 14.7 points on the season.
LA Tech (14-7, 6-2) had been holding steady one game back of the Blue Raiders until dropping a heated contest at UAB on Thursday, 79-70. The tightly contested game ended in an unusual manner with just four Bulldogs and six Blazers remaining after an on-court scuffle led to both benches clearing in Birmingham.
Erik McCree leads the way for LA Tech with 17.1 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, but the Bulldogs will be without second-leading scorer and top 3-point shooter Jacobi Boykins who is suspended due to his part in the altercation at UAB. Boykins is averaging 14.7 points per game and converting 41.8 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc.
Middle Tennessee and LA Tech are set to tip off at 5:00 p.m. inside the Murphy Center. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN3.
