Byrd, Saulo lead on day two
RIO GRANDE, PUERTO RICO – Middle Tennessee moved into the top five at the Puerto Rico Classic on Monday with a 1-under round of 287. The Blue Raiders are now tied for fifth entering Tuesday's final round on the Rio Mar River Course (6,902 yards, par 72).
Clemson is 16-under par to own the 36-hole lead which is seven strokes better than second place Georgia. Kentucky is third and NC State fourth. Eleven of the 15 teams are ranked in the top 50 nationally, including the Blue Raiders at 47.
Marcus Byrd and Ilari Saulo led the Blue Raiders on day two as Byrd carded a 3-under par 69 and Saulo with a 71.
Overall, freshman Chip Thomas is tied for 12th to lead Middle Tennessee. Thomas followed up his 2-under par 70 opening round with an even par 72 on Monday. He had three birdies on the day.
Senior Joey Savoie is tied for 19th at even par (144). Savoie shot 75 in the second round after an opening day 69.
Saulo is tied for 23rd with a 145 total and had six birdies in the second round, while Byrd is tied for 36th at 147. Byrd added five birdies in round two.
Hoyeong Kim is tied for 70th with a 157 to complete the Blue Raider scoring.
For the tournament, Middle Tennessee leads the field in par 3 scoring at 2-over, ranks fourth with 107 pars and is fifth with 34 birdies.
The third and final round will begin Tuesday morning and live scoring will be available at birdiefire.com.
