MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee will face its toughest opponent of the year, as the Blue Raiders host No. 24 Tennessee Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
The game was originally scheduled for 6 p.m., but due to cold weather concerns, it was moved up to a 4 p.m. first pitch.
Tuesday's game will account for the 55th time the two programs have met. Tennessee swept the series in 2016, winning at Reese Smith Jr. Field 4-2, and then again in Knoxville 9-2. The Vols lead the overall series 34-20.
The Blue Raiders look to get back on the right track after dropping the last two games at frigid Indiana. The Hoosiers ended the Blue Raiders four-game win streak by beating MT 12-1 Saturday and in the rubber match Sunday, 6-0.
MT hopes to find its bats in tomorrow's game, after only amassing six runs the three-game series at IU.
The Blue Raiders hope to have designated hitter Aaron Aucker back in the lineup Tuesday, after he missed the last two games battling an illness. Aucker is hitting .320 on the year, while tied for first on the team with 14 RBI.
Senior catcher Chaz Vesser looks to continue his hot hitting, as the Tennessee transfer hit .600 in three starts last week. Senior shortstop Riley Delgado leads the team with a .333 batting average in the leadoff spot.
On the mound, junior college transfer Tyler Hasper is back from a shoulder injury that occurred in the third inning of the game against Bowling Green (2/26). Hasper was magnificent in his first Blue Raider start against Georgia Southern (2/19), throwing a two-hit shutout in six innings of work. In that game, the junior struck out 11 batters, the most for a Blue Raider pitcher since Zac Curtis' 12 strikeouts in May of 2014.
In the bullpen, redshirt sophomore transfer, Tyler Holcombe ranks 15th in the nation with four saves on the year, one of which, came in Friday's night 5-3 win at Indiana.
The Vols are having an outstanding year with an 11-2 record, and being ranked nationally for the second straight week. UT is coming off a series win at home against Cincinnati. Tennessee dropped the Friday night matchup, and then came back to win the next two, 2-1 Saturday and 6-2 Sunday.
UT will start RHP Will Neely on the mound Tuesday afternoon. Neely is 1-0 on the year in three starts, compiling a 4.91 ERA in 14-2/3 innings of work.
