MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Blue Raiders are the road yet again, this time to open up the Conference USA season against Florida Atlantic for a three-game series with first pitch set for 5:30 p.m. Friday in Boca Raton, Fla.
First pitch Saturday is at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 11:00 a.m. MT has not played a game since last Sunday's loss at Indiana, due to weather conditions that postponed its home game against No. 24 Tennessee Tuesday.
The weekend series will account for the 33rd, 34th, and 35th time the two programs have met. The Blue Raiders lost the C-USA opening home series a year ago, despite winning the Friday night opener 8-6. The then-ranked No. 15 Owls battled back, winning Saturday (7-2) and again Sunday (12-1). FAU leads the overall series 17-15.
The Blue Raiders look to get back on the right track after dropping the last two games at frigid Indiana. The Hoosiers ended the Blue Raiders four-game win streak by beating MT 12-1 Saturday and in the rubber match Sunday, 6-0.
MT hopes to find its bats in the weekend series, after only amassing six runs the three-game set at IU.
The Blue Raiders hope to have designated hitter Aaron Aucker back in the lineup for the weekend, after he missed the last two games battling an illness. Aucker is hitting .320 on the year, while tied for first on the team with 14 RBI.
Senior catcher Chaz Vesser looks to continue his hot hitting, batting .600 in three starts last week. Senior shortstop Riley Delgado leads the team with a .333 batting average in the leadoff spot.
On the mound Friday will be junior standout Jake Wyrick. The southpaw has been crucial to MT's success, as the Blue Raiders are 4-0 when he starts the game. Wyrick is coming of a career performance of 11 strikeouts last weekend in the 5-3 win at Indiana. The Cleveland, Tenn. native leads the team with a 2.01 ERA (5th in C-USA) and in strikeouts with 29 (4th in C-USA).
On the mound, junior college transfer Tyler Hasper is back from a shoulder injury that occurred in the third inning of the game against Bowling Green (2/25). Hasper was magnificent in his first Blue Raider start against Georgia Southern (2/19), throwing a two-hit shutout in six innings of work. In that game, the junior struck out 11 batters, the most for a Blue Raider pitcher since Zac Curtis' 12 strikeouts in May of 2014.
On Sunday redshirt freshman Devin Conn will get the start on the mound. Conn had his best start of the season last Sunday at Indiana, hurling 4-1/3 innings, while allowing two runs, on five hits, no walks, while striking out two.
In the bullpen, redshirt sophomore transfer, Tyler Holcombe ranks 16th in the nation with four saves on the year, one of which, came in Friday's night 5-3 win at Indiana.
The Owls have been hot as of late, winning six of their last seven games, including a mid-week 14-2 win over Rutgers. FAU is also coming off a series win last weekend against Toledo. FAU played Indiana in February, a common opponent of MT, and tied the series 1-1-1 with IU.
FAU will start RHP Marc Stewart on the mound Friday night, RHP Alex House Saturday afternoon and LHP Jake Miednik Sunday. FAU has a team ERA of 4.44.
