Johnson nets her 1,000th career point in team's 20th win
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Middle Tennessee started slowly, but finished fast to conclude the regular season with a 71-59 win against Florida Atlantic here Saturday.
The win enabled Middle Tennessee to enjoy a 20-win season for the 12th straight year under Head Coach Rick Insell and for the 14th straight season overall.
Senior standout Ty Petty has enjoyed a remarkable senior campaign, but she saved her best for the regular-season finale. Petty rallied the Lady Raiders with a career-high 33-point effort on the strength of 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. She added four steals and three rebounds.
Sophomore Alex Johnson became part of Lady Raider history in the win. Johnson entered the game needing 11 points for 1,000 for her career. She finished with 15 to become just the third sophomore to achieve the feat, joining Priscilla (Robinson) Murray and Ebony Rowe. She is the 31st member of the 1,000-point club and the 15th coached by Insell.
"If Ty Petty doesn't show up, I don't know that we win this game," Insell said. "What a tremendous performance by a solid player. Just remarkable.
"Alex Johnson has been a force for us all season. To score 1,000 points in your first two seasons out of high school is so tough to do. Middle Tennessee has played Division I basketball for 42 years and Alex Johnson is the third player to achieve this. That's pretty special."
Gabby Lyon also came up big, scoring 11 points and ripping eight rebounds to go with three blocked shots and three steals. Abbey Sissom tallied seven points, Rebecca Reuter added three and Jess Louro two.
Middle Tennessee fell behind 18-7 at after the first quarter, but it rallied to take a slim 35-34 halftime lead. The game was still tight in the fourth quarter. The Lady Raiders led by three midway through the frame, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Petty put distance between Middle Tennessee and FAU. Sissom provided the dagger with a long 3-pointer with 1:04 remaining.
Next up for the Lady Raiders (20-9, 15-3) is the Metro PCS C-USA Championship in Birmingham.
