Raiders Take Down FAU 2-1 in Nine Innings

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Middle Tennessee softball team wrapped up its conference road series at Florida Atlantic today, Saturday, April 15. For the second time of the series, the game went into extra innings with MT coming out victorious, 2-1, off Summer Burgess' RBI single in the top of the ninth. The Raiders move to 14-23, 4-11 while the Owls drop to 28-16, 9-6.
The Owls got on the board first in the series finale. In the bottom of the third, with two outs, FAU singled back up the middle. A double to left center from Delaney Rickey followed that allowed the runner to come around and score from first to take a 1-0 lead.
The Raiders came back to tie the game, 1-1, in the top of the fifth. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Burgess came around to score as Precious Birdsong smacked a triple over the head of the left fielder.
FAU threatened with another walk off win in the bottom of the seventh. A single to right followed by a single up the middle to put runners on the corners with two outs and a tie ball game. The Raiders were able to get out of the jam and forced extras as Cori Jennings fielded a grounder for out number three.
In the top of the ninth, Lexi Cushing led off with a single to left center then Kristin Uselton followed with a huge double to right center. Into pinch hit, Danielle Munoz got a walk to load the bases. Then with two outs, Burgess smacked a single just past the diving Owl shortstop to make it 2-1.
The Owls got a walk in the bottom half of the ninth inning but the Raiders were able to field three outs and hold onto the 2-1 win.
Jennings got the complete game win, moving to 8-11 on the year, she struck out seven. The Raiders outhit the Owls 10-5 with Birdsong going 3-for-5 with a triple and a RBI. Cushing was 2-for-4 while scoring a run and Burgess was 1-for-4 with a run scored and the game winning RBI.
Middle will be back in action hosting a couple of midweek games next week. The Raiders play Alabama A&M in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 18 starting at 4pm followed by a single game against Belmont on Wednesday, April 19 at 6pm.
