Blue Raiders win series, can't complete sweep
4/2/2017 4:28:00 PM | Baseball
The Blue Raiders were in control of the game until the seventh
The Blue Raiders (13-15, 3-6 C-USA) were on the other side of a comeback effort, allowing The Herd (12-13, 4-5 C-USA) to take control of the game in the seventh inning.
The loss snaps MT's four-game win streak.
Blue Raiders were in complete control of the game heading into the bottom of the seventh leading 6-1. Starter Cody Puckett got in a first and second, no outs jam. MT went to its bullpen, who could not stop the Marshall offense.
Marshall homered twice and scored six runs in the seventh, giving The Herd the 7-6 lead. MU added another insurance run in the eighth inning.
"It was very frustrating day, we had a chance to sweep on the road," said Head Coach Jim McGuire. "When it came down to it we were one pitcher short."
The Blue Raiders jumped on The Herd early in the third inning. Sophomore Blake Benefield led off the third inning with a walk. Freshman Aaron Antonini was hit by a pitch for the second straight game, putting runners on first and second. Jarreau caught Marshall off guard with a perfectly placed bunt, loading the bases with no outs.
Austin Dennis continued his big weekend early on in the game, picking up his sixth RBI of the series, with a sac fly to score Benefield. After an infield pop-up, Drew Huff delivered another clutch hit, blooping a two-out, RBI-single to left field. Second baseman Ryan Kemp doubled his RBI total, ripping a two-RBI single, giving the Blue Raiders the 4-0 lead.
Marshall answered with a solo shot in the fourth. MT led 4-1 after four innings. The Blue Raiders added two more runs in sixth on two wild pitches.
Puckett in just his second career start had a solid outing, throwing six innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out seven.
Blake Stansberry (0-1) was credited with the loss, while Marshall's reliever Hunter Sexton (2-1) earned the win in relief.
The Blue Raiders will make the mid-week trip to Knoxville Tuesday to take on Tennessee. First pitch set for 5 p.m.
