Softball Weathers Storm for Series Win at LA Tech
4/2/2017 3:05:00 PM | Softball
RUSTON, La. – The Middle Tennessee softball team weathered two thunderstorm delays to pick up a 9-8 come from behind extra innings win over LA Tech on Sunday, April 2. With the win, the Raiders also take the series, 2-1, over the Lady Techsters. The game was highlighted by Gretchen Greer's lights out pitching effort. She struck out nine in 4.2 innings of work in relief starting in the bottom of the fourth. MT is now 12-19, 3-9 while LA Tech falls to 22-14, 6-3.
LA Tech scored in the first inning for the third time this series. A single down the left field line followed by two fielder's choices had the bases loaded with no outs. A sacrifice fly from Taria Page pushed one run across and then a double steal gave the Lady Techsters a 2-0 lead. Natalie Moran then singled to left center to bring another run around to score.
After a thirty minute lightning delay in the middle of the second inning, LA Tech got on the board again. A chop singe from Ali Galaz put her on base and she came around to score on a single to right center from Morgan Turkoly.
The Raiders got on the board in the top of the third, scoring four runs on five hits. Kaylyn Slatter and Deja Portillo hit back-to-back singles to start and came around to score on a single from Precious Birdsong and a huge double to centerfield from Morgan Harris. Austyn Whaley kept the hit streak going with an RBI single to left center to cut the LA Tech lead to 4-3. Whaley scored to tie the game a batter later on a passed ball.
The game then again went into a lightning and rain delay, lasting just over an hour this time.
Following the delay, LA Tech got on the scoreboard for the third-straight inning. Katie Smith reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score following a stolen base and two base hits. The Lady Techsters then followed with a triple and a single to take a 7-4 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Raiders tied the game up at seven apiece as Slatter hit her first career home run off the scoreboard in left center. Then after Summer Burgess reached on a bunt single, Birdsong belted a home run of her own over the fence in right field.
In the bottom half of the inning, LA Tech retook the lead. The Lady Techsters loaded the bases on two walks and a double before Katie Moran hit sacrifice fly to deep center field to make it 8-7. The Lady Techsters found themselves with the bases loaded again following another walk but Greer came into the circle and recorded two-straight strikeouts to get the Raiders out the jam.
Middle once again came back to tie the game at 8-8 in the fifth. Kristin Uselton reached on an error to lead off. She was replaced by a pinch runner, Lauren Payne. Payne scored on a single through the left side from Slatter.
Greer continued to be lights out on the Lady Techster offense, striking out four of the next five batters she faced.
No team was able to break the tie, with the game heading to extra innings.
In the top of eight, Burgess got a one out single to left center. Then, Birdsong and Harris followed with walks to load the bases. Up next, Whaley lifted a ball to deep centerfield and Burgess tagged up to score and give MT a 9-8 lead. However, the umpires ruled that Birdsong left early at second base and the inning was over, but the run would score.
The Blue Raider defense put the game away in the bottom of the eighth on a running catch from Portillo in left and a sliding catch along the first base dugout from Harris. Greer finished off the game with her ninth strikeout of the game.
Greer was credited with the win in the circle to move to 5-2 on the year. She struck out nine in 4.2 innings of work while surrendering just one hit.
Offensively, Birdsong went 2-for-3, scored twice and walked twice to go with three RBI and a home run. Slatter went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, two RBI and a home run. Whaley was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
MT returns to action for a midweek game at Belmont on Wednesday, April 5 at 5pm.
