MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Just four weeks after a 6-1 win over Charlotte, Middle Tennessee is set to square off against the 49ers for the second time this season in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championship.
Although the last matchup against Charlotte was at the C-USA Pod in Norfolk, Virginia, the Adams Tennis Complex will be host to this 2 p.m. match on Friday between the four and five seeds.
"We're thrilled to host this year's tournament and get to play in front of our fans another time," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "Our guys are pretty familiar with Charlotte, and we're expecting a real battle on the first day of the tournament."
This is the first time in MT program history that the conference tournament will be played in Murfreesboro, and the first time the Blue Raiders compete in a conference tournament in their home state since the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament was held in Nashville from 1993 to 2000.
Aside from playing Rice in the quarterfinals of MT's first C-USA Championship, this will be the third postseason meeting between the Blue Raiders and 49ers. Charlotte got the upper hand in 2015, but MT got revenge in 2016 with a 4-1 win, clinched by Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore.
In the first meeting between the two teams this season, Charlotte got on the board first with two commanding doubles wins, but the Blue Raiders would retaliate. Morell, Tom Moonen and Max Rauch all earned straight-set wins, and MT won in three sets on every other court to sweep singles and finish off the 6-1 win.
Charlotte finished the regular season with a 12-13 mark, including an unblemished home record at 5-0, despite going 0-3 in conference play. Sam Rice leads the way for the 49ers in singles action with a record of 8-14 at the top spot. C-USA All-Academic team member Alejandro Garcia Moreno is tied for the team lead in dual match singles wins with a 15-10 record. Oriol Puig Forne enters the C-USA Championship on a six-match win streak and leads the team in total singles wins with 22.
Despite the sub-.500 dual match singles win percentage, the 49ers typically start singles with a 1-0 advantage due to stellar doubles play. Six doubles tandems have combined for a 12-3 mark at No. 3 doubles, while Charlotte is also 12-11 at the top doubles spot.
Admission is free to the Adams Tennis Complex for every match of the C-USA Championship, and live stats will be available for every match.
