MT returns to action for season finale Sunday
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Despite a pair of comeback bids Saturday afternoon, Middle Tennessee dropped a double header to Charlotte to open the final weekend of the season.
Game 1: MT 6, CHA 7
The Blue Raiders (19-29, 6-17) struck first in the opening game with a pair of runs in the first inning when Morgan Harris connected on her second home run of the season to drive in Summer Burgess.
The 49ers (28-22, 10-12) answered with three runs in the home-half of the first, before Kirstyn Cuccia sent a solo shot down the right field line to knot the score at 3-3.
Charlotte would answer once more with a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth innings to claim a 7-3 lead. The Blue Raiders mustered one final effort in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Kaylyn Slatter hit-by-pitch and Austyn Whaley walked cut the deficit to 7-5, and a Dani Munoz fielder's choice drove in another run.
Charlotte would silence the rally, however, with one final out and claim game one 7-6.
Game 2: MT 6, CHA 8
The 49ers carried its game one momentum into the latter half of the twin bill and built a quick 3-0 lead after the first inning.
Middle Tennessee closed the gap, with a run in the second and a pair of runs in the third inning. Charlotte, however, answered every MT run and built an 8-5 lead in the fifth inning.
The Blue Raiders attempted one final comeback when Whaley drove in Precious Birdsong in the sixth inning, but came no closer as the Niners took the game 8-6 to claim the series.
Miscues plagued the Blue Raiders as MT was guilty of 3 fielding errors and stranded nine base runners.
Despite the early struggles, Megan Chocallo limited the 49ers in two innings pitched.
Birdsong continued her hot hitting as the junior went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
The Blue Raiders seek to bounce back in its season finale tomorrow afternoon at 11 a.m.
