Middle Tennessee Women's Tennis saw three athletes in action last weekend as the Blue Raiders finished with a 13-4 combined singles and doubles record at the Hoosier Classic last weekend. This weekend, four more Blue Raiders will make their season debuts as they travel to the Lone Star State for the SMU Invitational. Fans can get live updates from the tournament on Twitter (@MT_WomensTennis).
Match Information
SMU Invitational hosted by SMU
Players Attending: Lee Barnard, Zani Barnard, Marta Peris Herrero, Kim Kermet
Tournament History
MT made the trip to Texas last spring for a neutral site match with Brown ahead of a conference match with North Texas. The Blue Raiders won both matches 4-3.
Players to watch
Lee Barnard – After not competing last fall, Lee established herself as one of the top singles players in her first season with the Blue Raiders. She turned in an 11-3 record playing at every position in the lineup except 1. Barnard also gained a reputation for outlasting the competition as she went 5-0 in matches that ended in the third set.
Zani Barnard – Similar to her twin sister, Zani did not compete in the fall season last year, but was one of the strongest singles players in the Blue Raiders' lineup in the spring. Barnard went 11-2 in singles and was undefeated at 4, 5, and 6 in the lineup. The Barnards were also doubles partners last season and took down the No. 89-ranked doubles pair from Tulane on Feb. 25, 6-1.
Marta Peris Herrero – In her sophomore season, Peris had an impressive fall season with a 21-11 combined record. She made it to the finals of the Samford Fall Invitational and won seven straight matches between October 14 to November 10. She carried that momentum into the spring as well and posted winning records in both singles and doubles for the Blue Raiders.
Kim Kermet – Kermet was honored as an All-Conference Second-Team Singles last season and for good reason. She went 14-8 in spring singles and finished the season winning her last three matches in a row. In her last fall season, she won nine singles matches along with four doubles matches.
Coach's Comments
"I am looking forward to girls competing at SMU and continuing the momentum from last weekend," said Head Coach Tayo Bailey-Duvall. "There will be some quality teams represented which will help prepare us for ITA regionals next week."
