MT drops Battle 4 Atlantis finale to Stanford
11/23/2018 9:30:00 PM | Men's Basketball
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas – Hampered by turnovers and poor shooting percentages, Middle Tennessee dropped its final game of the Battle 4 Atlantis Friday evening against Stanford, 67-54.
Both the Blue Raiders and Cardinal started sloppy on Friday evening, combining for 23 turnovers before halftime while shooting just 32 and 30 percent, respectively, from the floor.
After a 4-4 score in the opening moments, a pair of 3-pointers by Stanford quickly opened up a 6-point lead before the MT would respond. Respond they did, though, with an 8-0 run capped off by an old fashioned 3-point play by Antonio Green to give him five points early on.
The field goal lead for MT wouldn't last long, however, as another Stanford triple put the Cardinal back on top at 13-12.
Middle Tennessee would tie the game at 18 apiece out of the under-8 media timeout, but then Stanford went on an 11-0 run similar to those that crushed the Blue Raiders one day earlier.
MT went without a field goal from that point on in the first half, missing their final six attempts from the field and went just 5-for-8 from the free throw line over that stretch.
The Raiders were also without a made 3-point basket before the break for the first time this season, missing their only two attempts from beyond the arc as Stanford used a 7-for-17 mark from three to pad their lead.
Stanford opened the second half with a dunk to get their bench up and loud. Middle Tennessee quieted them quickly with a pair of jumpers by Anthony Crump and Green to cut the lead to seven, but a 13-4 run by the Cardinal then pushed the lead out to 16 with 12 minutes remaining in the contest.
The Blue Raider defense began to pick up some steam down the stretch and finished the game having forced a season high 21 turnovers, but failed to capitalize on the offensive end to pull themselves back within single digits.
Middle Tennessee would manage to cut the Cardinal lead to 10 with 3:05 remaining thanks to their late, gritty defense, but wouldn't get within three possessions before falling by the final margin of 13.
"I thought our guys played hard tonight," Head Coach Nick McDevitt said. "From a lot of different players there was some growth out there tonight. We just weren't able to execute, though. You just can't turn it over that many times and beat a quality opponent."
Green led the Blue Raiders on offense Friday with 21 points on 9-of-20 shooting while Johnson added a career-high 14 points to go along with five rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
As their time in Atlantis closed with an 0-for-5 mark from behind the 3-point line, so did a 21-year streak of games with a 3-pointer made as Middle Tennessee failed to convert from beyond the arc for the first time in 714 contests dating back to 1996.
Middle Tennessee now has a week-long break from game action before returning to Murphy Center on Saturday, Dec. 1, to host Nashville foe Lipscomb.
