MT downs Dartmouth, 70-58
LAS VEGAS, N.V. – Middle Tennessee got off to a strong start in the opening game of the UNLV Lady Rebel Roundup, using another balanced scoring attack to down Dartmouth, 70-58, and punch its ticket into Sunday's title game.
The Lady Raiders (4-2) had four players score in double figures as they controlled the game from the outset, leading for all but 4 minutes and 21 seconds. They will play the winner of the UNLV vs. UC-Santa Barbara game Sunday.
Freshman guard Taylor Sutton led Middle Tennessee with 17 points on the strength of four 3-pointers, followed by A'Queen Hayes with 15, Anna Jones with 14 and Alex Johnson added 13 in the triumph.
"It was a tough game against a really good team, especially on the defensive end," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "I was proud of our team and how they competed. We have had two good practices out here, and I believe we got those practices into the game. We had a lot of big-time plays from big-time players."
In a game featuring many big plays, Jones came up with one (or two) of the biggest.
Dartmouth had pulled to within 60-52 with under four minutes to play and trying to remain undefeated, but Jones had other ideas.
Jones knocked down a pressure-packed 3-pointer to stretch the lead back to 11, 63-52, and then after a Dartmouth miss, she buried another trey to essentially seal the win.
Jones was four-of-five from 3-point range after draining five straight in the win against Mississippi Valley State.
"She's a winner," Insell said. "It's not always how many points or shots you hit, but when you hit them. Anna Jones came up big when we needed her today."
Hayes had another stat-sheet stuffer. The stellar senior guard was dynamic once again with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting, to go with a season-high eight assists, six rebounds, two steals and one block. She played all 40 minutes.
Johnson was solid with a 6-for-9 shooting effort to go with five rebounds and three assists. Jess Louro narrowly missed a double-double with seven points and 10 rebounds. Her 10 caroms led the Lady Raiders and helped enable Middle Tennessee to win the rebounding battle for the sixth time in six games.
Middle Tennessee jumped out to a 16-13 first-quarter lead and was ahead 34-28 at the break. Dartmouth battled in the second half and trailed 52-46 after three, but the Lady Raiders eventually pulled away to earn victory.
