Sutton named MVP
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Taylor Sutton is making quite an impact for Middle Tennessee early in her rookie campaign.
Sutton, the Lady Raiders' true freshman point guard, delivered a sterling performance to lead Middle Tennessee's 66-62 win against host UNLV in the title game of the UNLV Lady Rebel Roundup here Sunday.
Sutton led four Lady Raiders in double figures with 22 points while adding three assists and one steal to garner most valuable player honors. The Atlanta, Ga., native averaged 19.5 in two tournament wins. Earlier this season, Sutton became the first true freshman to start at point for Middle Tennessee since Shanice Cason in 2011.
Middle Tennessee (5-2) won its third straight to capture the tournament title. In addition to Sutton's 22-point outburst, Jess Louro provided a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
A'Queen Hayes put together another outstanding all-around display of brilliance with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting to go with seven rebounds and five assists. Anna Jones tallied 10 points and Alex Johnson finished with nine points, five rebounds and six assists.
"Our players really came out here with some intensity and focus," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We just outplayed UNLV today. We executed and hit shots. UNLV is a very good basketball team, big, lanky and good, but the Lady Raiders really came to play today and in this tournament."
Although it was nip-and-tuck throughout, Middle Tennessee controlled the game after a high-scoring first quarter. The game was tied at 22 after one quarter and it was close throughout the second frame, but Sutton nailed a pair of field goals in the final 58 seconds and the Lady Raiders pushed the halftime advantage to 37-29.
UNLV would get as close as the final score of four in the second half but the tough Middle Tennessee defense never buckled. In fact, with the game on the line the Lady Raider defense was paramount in the second half when it held the Lady Rebels to 3-of-11 shooting, including 0-of-2 from 3-point range.
Middle Tennessee, on the other hand, blistered the nets in the second half when it knocked down 5-of-8 field goals for 62 percent. The Lady Raiders shot 52 percent (24-of-46) for the game, including a sizzling 44 percent (10-of-23) from 3-point range.
The Lady Raiders dished out 17 assists on their 24 field goals and scored 20 points off of the 16 turnovers they forced.
Middle Tennessee will put its three-game win streak on the line when it plays host to Georgia State in the annual Murfreesboro City Schools Education Game Thursday. Tipoff is 11 AM.
