BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman Stijn Slump finished second in his singles draw while Senior Jacob Pugh finished runner-up in the consolation draw. The pair also finished third in their doubles draw.
Slump took down opponents from Mississippi State, Southern Miss, and ETSU. The latter, David Gonzalez, is ranked nationally in the ITA rankings. The freshman only lost three sets all weekend and finishes the fall 7-4 in singles.
Coming off his singles draw win in Louisville, Pugh rebounded from an opening match loss to make it to the finals of the consolation draw. On his way to the consolation final, he topped opponents from South Alabama and Ole Miss.
Coach's Comments
Jacob and Stijn did a great job this weekend," said Assistant Coach Sebastian Rey. "Stijn went 3-1 in singles play with wins over Mississippi State and a nationally ranked opponent from ETSU. He fell in the final of his draw to a very strong Alabama player but played great all weekend. I liked the way he stayed composed in the tough moments. The transition of junior tennis to college tennis is always tough but Stijn has showed how strong a player he is and his potential. Jacob went 2-2 in singles play with a memorable win against Ole Miss, down 5-1 in the first set he fought back and won 7-6, 6-4. I've been very impressed with Jacob's resilience and his ability to stick to his game plan at tough moments. Just like in his last fall tournament he has shown his senior leadership and a role model to the freshman on our team."
