MT Earns Third Straight Shutout in 4-0 Win Over Nicholls St.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee softball team recorded their third shutout and sixth win in a row on Sunday in the final game of the Black and Gold Tournament. The Blue Raiders bested Nicholls State, 4-0, behind 10 strikeouts from Gretchen Greer.

MT improves their season record to 7-4 following the five game weekend.

In the top of the second, Lexi Cushing got the Blue Raider offense going, sending a leadoff single to right field. A ground out and a bunt single from Claire Smith moved Cushing to third. She was able to score easily as Kirstyn Cuccia sent a sacrifice fly into centerfield. Smith scored a batter later as Deja Portillo made it safely to first on an infield single to first base.

Middle added to their lead in the fourth as this time it was Smith got the rally started. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a wild pitch. Kristin Uselton then hit the ball back up the middle, hitting the pitcher, which brought Smith across to make it 3-0. Portillo, into pinch run for Uselton came around to score as Summer Burgess doubled down the left field line and Keely McGee followed with a single to shallow left.

With the lead in her hands, Greer continued to be lights out in the circle. She recorded two strikeouts in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. Greer picked up her 10^th of the game on the final batter of the game, to earn her first win of the year.

The Blue Raiders will next take the field in Madeira Beach, Fla. for the EMU Spring Invitational II. Middle is scheduled to play Kent State, Marist, Eastern Michigan, Rhode Island and No. 24 McNeese State. First pitch of the weekend is set for Friday, Feb. at 5:30 p.m.
