MT rolls 11-6 in Mule Mix Classic
The Blue Raiders (4-1) remained undefeated at Reese Smith Field to start the season and will continue play in the Mule Mix with a date against Indiana State Saturday at 2 p.m.
While contributions were exceptional throughout the lineup, LA Woodard and Myles Christian were outstanding table setters at the top of the order. The electrifying duo were a combined 4-for-6 with three RBI, two runs scored, six walks and four stolen bases.
Woodard created all kinds of havoc with his excellent speed. He was 3-for-5 for his third multi-hit game of the season. He stole three bases and is now 6-for-6 in that category, while also driving in two runs and scoring two. The junior also collected his second double of the season.
Christian was moved into the two-hole behind Woodard for the first time and paid immediate dividends. The freshman reached base in all six plate appearances, going 1-for-1 with his first career triple and adding five walks.
Ryan Kemp was 1-for-3 with three runs, and Aaron Aucker (1-for-2, two runs), Drew Huff (1-for-4, one RBI, one run scored), Blake Benefield (1-for-4, one run, one RBI) and Aaron Antonini (1-for-4, two runs) all collected base knocks. Austin Dennis also had a pair of RBI for the Blue Raiders.
"Overall, we did a good job at the plate," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire. "We took advantage of some opportunities today and when we were able to get runners in scoring position we found ways to get them home. I thought (Woodard and Christian) really helped get us going at the top of the order."
While the offense was more than enough, Middle Tennessee's relief corps needed to deliver and it did. Fairleigh Dickinson scored six runs, five earned off of starter Jake Wyrick and AJ Spencer; however, Conner Bell, Blake Stansberry and Huff slammed the door.
The score was 7-6 in favor of Middle Tennessee when Bell entered. He struck out the only batter he faced before turning it over to Blake Stansberry who was outstanding in his 1-2/3 innings of work. Stansberry didn't not allow hit and struck out two of the five batters he faced. Huff was electric once again, striking out all three hitters he faced in the ninth.
The trio combined to pitch three innings of no-hit, shutout baseball with six strikeouts and no walks. Spencer (1-0) earned the win with 1-2/3 innings of two-hit relief.
Middle Tennessee fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first but answered with a three-spot in the bottom of the second. The game was back and forth until the Blue Raiders took the lead for good with a three-run fifth.
Consistent hitting and quality baserunning enabled the Blue Raiders to score runs in all but two innings and they scored at least one run in every inning from the fourth to the eighth.
