MT loses first home game of season to Indiana State
2/24/2018 6:30:00 PM | Baseball
The Sycamores (4-2) traveled with some hot bats after taking down Lipscomb 17-3 on Friday, and the MT pitching staff couldn't contain them. The Blue Raiders (4-2) gave up 17 hits and walked another 14 batters in the contest.
Junior right-hander Andy Rivera got the nod on the bump, his second start as a Blue Raider, but lasted just 1/3 of an inning after an injury.
Freshman Zach Keenan supplanted Rivera in his third relief appearance of the young season and couldn't escape the jam unscathed. He gave up a two-run single and three-run home run to the first two batters then gave up another single in the inning before finally getting out.
Keenan was the longest-lasting pitcher of the day for MT, going 3 2/3 innings and notching five strikeouts to go with six hits surrendered and four earned runs, the first four of his college career.
Middle Tennessee got two runs back in the bottom of the first when senior Aaron Aucker grounded out and scored junior LA Woodard and junior Ryan Kemp singled, scoring junior Austin Dennis.
The Blue Raiders exited the first frame trailing 5-2, but the three-run deficit wouldn't last long. The Sycamores added two runs in the top of the second, then another four in the sixth, one in the eighth and nine in the ninth to take the 21-4 win.
Woodard continued his strong start to the season at the plate. The Kansas City Community College transfer went 2-for-3 with a run scored, stolen base and walk. He's hitting .455 this season and has team highs with seven runs scored and seven stolen bases in eight attempts.
Dennis added a 2-for-4 day at the dish, while Kemp, junior Blake Benefield, redshirt senior Will Schnure and redshirt sophomore Darrell Freeman Jr. had one hit apiece. Freshman Jake Hagenow also had a 2-for-3 day, notching his second multi-hit game and first double.
In the bottom of the ninth with Hagenow at second base, freshman Brycen Thomas entered as a pinch hitter for sophomore Manuel Lopez and smashed a two-run blast over the center field fence. It was not only his first homer and pair of RBIs as a Blue Raider, but also his first for the blue and white.
Middle Tennessee will conclude the Mule Mix Classic on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Kent State at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
