MT vs. Chattanooga results
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – For the ninth time in the 2018 season, Middle Tennessee women's tennis won the doubles point in the Blue Raiders' 4-0 win over Chattanooga in the first of two home matches this weekend.
MT is now 8-1 this season when they take the first point in the match. Lee Barnard and Zani Barnard jumped out to a 4-0 lead on court three and closed out their match, 6-2, to open up the scoring. Maria Josefina Zehnder and Luisa Zirilli finished their match at No. 1 shortly after that with a score of 6-2, clinching the doubles point.
"The Barnard sisters are good together. They're learning how to succeed on and off the court when they don't always have each other, but when they're both together, they're very good," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said.
In singles action, Costanza Magazzini cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 to make the score 2-0, in favor of the Blue Raiders. Zehnder and Zani Barnard won their matches in third sets at No. 1 and No. 6, respectively, to close out the 4-0 sweep of Chattanooga.
"It helps when you look up at the scoreboard and see a teammate come off the court 6-2, 6-0 like Costi was able to do and put another point on the board," Ramsay said. When you're playing and you look up there and it's 2-0, that gives you confidence. This was a true team effort, and I'm proud of the girls tonight."
The Blue Raiders will be back at the Adams Tennis Complex on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. against Tulane, who takes a 6-4 record into the weekend. Free T-shirts will be given out at the match on Sunday.
"This was a big win. Everyone competed really hard, and it was important for us to win this match," Magazzini said. "We're ready for Tulane on Sunday."
