Blue Raiders drop opener of Tri-Star Classic to Memphis
3/2/2018 10:13:00 PM | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee suffered defeat to the Memphis Tigers 6-4 in their first game of the Tri-Star Classic on a chilly night in Knoxville.
Right-handed pitcher Zach Keenan got the start for MT (4-5). The freshman threw 3-1/3 innings, only giving up two earned runs and striking out three.
"I thought (Keenan) did a good job. He battled; he wasn't perfect," said Jim McGuire. "But he's a freshman that got put in a very difficult situation. But I thought he did a good job overall."
Tyler Holcombe relieved Keenan in the fourth inning and had a stellar day on the mound. The junior went 4-2/3 innings, only giving up two hits against 18 batters faced.
"I thought Tyler was really good tonight. He threw as well as he has since early last year," said McGuire. "It was lack of execution on the offensive end that got to us though."
Memphis (4-5) jumped ahead 3-0 on the Blue Raiders in the top of the third inning. However, MT battled back in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs.
Two Blue Raiders scored off a Ryan Kemp fielder's choice and error from Memphis. One batter later, Aaron Aucker hit a double off the centerfield wall that scored Kemp, putting MT ahead 4-3
However, the Tigers were able to plate a run in each of the sixth and eighth inning to go ahead 6-4 and seal the deal.
Aaron Antonini had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-3. Austin Dennis and Myles Christian also added hits for the Blue Raiders, each going 1-for-3 and drawing a walk.
Andy Wright closed the game for the Blue Raiders on the mound, throwing an impressive final inning, only giving up one hit and no runs.
Middle Tennessee has the chance to bounce back tomorrow in game two of the Tri-Star Classic against East Tennessee State University. Carson Lester is expected to start on the mound and first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
