Blue Raiders win opener of series vs. Old Dominion
3/30/2018 11:28:00 PM | Baseball
NORFOLK, Va.- Middle Tennessee (15-11, 4-3) used another quick offensive start to beat Old Dominion (9-15, 2-5) by a score of 10-5.
"The hitting was good tonight and we were able to build up a cushion of a lead." Said head coach Jim McGuire
For the 11th time this season the Blue Raiders scored in the first inning. Aaron Antonini had the big hit of the inning when he singled to right field driving in Austin Dennis.
The Blue Raiders are 9-2 when scoring in the first inning.
Senior pitcher Jake Wyrick threw his best game of the season thus far. Wyrick struck out the first four batters he faced and didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning. Wyrick finished his day with a season high 10 strikeouts, allowing just three walks and one earned run.
"He set the tone right away." Said coach McGuire. "He struck out the side in the first inning and I think everyone knew he meant business tonight."
After scoring a run in the second and fifth inning, The Blue Raiders broke it open in the sixth inning.
Jake Hagenow got the inning started with a double to left center and would come around to score when Austin Dennis singled to right field. LA Woodard would also score on the play after an error on the Monarch's right fielder. Drew Huff would get an RBI when he singled to center to score Aaron Aucker.
There was a 20-minute delay in the top of the 7th inning when some of the outfield stadium lights shut off, but the Blue Raiders were able to keep focus.
The long delay was enough to end Wyrick's night early. Scheldon Paulk came in to relieve Wyrick to begin the 7th inning. Paulk went 2.1 innings while Tyler Holcombe came in to get the final two outs.
Old Dominion had to burn through five bullpen pitchers after starter Brett Smith left with an injury after facing just two batters.
This win tonight marks the 150th career win for Jim McGuire in his 6th season as the Blue Raiders head coach.
Junior Carson Lester is scheduled to start tomorrow vs. Old Dominion at 2 p.m.
