MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's men's tennis team won over Drake, 4-2, and Alabama A&M, 6-1, to move the win streak to five and improve to 17-4 on the year with four regular season matches remaining.
Against Drake, the Blue Raiders started the match by winning with a score of 6-3 on No. 2 from Max Rauch and Jan Porteset, followed by a 6-3 win at No. 2 by Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore and Miguel Negre Fernandez.
Gian Issa cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win on court five to help MT take a 2-0 lead, but Drake got on the board with a straight-set win at No. 4. After Luis Morillo Diaz won at No. 6, the Bulldogs again fought back to pull the deficit to one point. Morell clinched the first MT win of the day with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2.
"We started off slow in doubles, but credit to Jan and Max for getting us fired up and winning their match," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "We know Drake's a good team, so this was a great win for our guys."
The Blue Raiders kept their momentum going in the second match of the day, winning over Alabama A&M by a score of 6-1.
Porteset and Rauch were first to finish in doubles at No. 3 with a score of 6-1, followed by Tom Moonen and Chris Edge at the top spot, 6-1. Negre and Morell were leading 4-1 on court two but were unable to finish their match.
MT gave up a combined five games in six sets on the first three singles courts. Porteset and Edge were the first two to finish, followed by Tom Moonen to clinch the second victory of the day. Nicolas Buitrago Machado and Rauch put the fifth and sixth points on the scoreboard with wins on courts five and four, respectively.
"The first match was tough, and we've got the depth, so we really took advantage of that today," Borendame said of the lineup against Alabama A&M. "We wanted to get more guys some matches. When you don't get to play every day, it's hard to be match-tough, but I thought our guys fought hard."
VCU and William & Mary will visit the Adams Tennis Complex next weekend, as the Blue Raiders take on the Rams Saturday at 11 a.m. before facing off against the Tribe on Sunday.
