Blue Raiders fall in series opener vs. Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss.- The Blue Raiders (20-18-1, 6-9-1) fell behind early against Southern Miss (26-11, 11-4), losing the series opener 9-1 on Friday.
"Their starter dominated us from the start." Said Head Coach Jim McGuire. "He was on again tonight like he was last week."
The Blue Raiders couldn't get in a groove against the Southern Miss southpaw. Pitcher Stevie Powers was dominant in his second straight start for the Golden Eagles. Powers set a career high in strikeouts with 12, after striking out 10 last weekend.
Southern Miss got the scoring started in the first inning with a bases-loaded triple followed by a throwing error that scored the fourth run.
They would plate two more runs in the second inning to push their lead to 6-0.
Myles Christian would put the Blue Raiders on the board in the fifth with an RBI double to left center scoring Drew Huff from first base.
The Golden Eagles would tack on two runs in the fifth inning, and another in the sixth inning.
Austin Dennis had a nice day at the plate going 2-for-4. He also grabbed his team-leading 18th stolen base on the season in the 1st inning.
Aaron Aucker grabbed his C-USA leading 16th double of the season in the 9th inning.
In relief of starter Jake Wyrick, Grant Williams threw four innings, giving up two runs and walking just one.
Due to impending weather, Sunday's game has been moved to Saturday. The doubleheader between Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss will start at 1:30 p.m. Right hander Carson Lester is projected to start game one tomorrow.
