MT drops both games of doubleheader

HATTIESBURG, Miss.- The Blue Raiders (20-20-1, 6-11-1) dropped both games of the doubleheader Saturday vs. Southern Miss (28-11, 13-4) falling in game one 11-2 and 8-0 in game two.
In game one, Southern Miss used seven runs in the first three innings to overpower the Blue Raiders, cruising to an 11-2 victory.
Aaron Aucker drove in the Blue Raiders first run of the game in the third inning with a sacrifice fly to score LA Woodard.
Southern Miss would hit two two-run home runs in the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead to 11-1.
The Blue Raiders would pick up another run in the top of the 6th, when Ryan Kemp scored from third from a Drew Huff ground out. Kemp finished the series with five hits on 11 at bats.
Peyton Wigginton, Blake Stansberry, and Scheldon Paulk all saw action out of the Blue Raider bullpen. Stansberry went one inning, giving up just one hit, while Paulk threw two innings giving up one hit and striking out three batters.
The Blue Raiders were only able to draw two walks in game one after drawing just one the night before.
In game two the Blue Raiders again found themselves down early. After two scoreless frames to begin the game, Southern Miss broke it open in the third inning hitting two home runs, one of those being a grand slam.
For Southern Miss, junior right-handed Nick Sandlin threw a gem after missing his previous two starts. Sandlin had 12 strikeouts in the 16 batters he faced in five innings of work.
The Blue Raiders could only muster 3 hits in game two vs. the Golden Eagles pitching staff. Ryan Kemp led off the second inning with a single. After that, 16 straight Blue Raiders batters were set down in order until Aaron Aucker's single to left field in the seventh inning.
The Blue Raiders used four pitchers in game two vs. the Golden Eagles. Connor Bell pitched one inning giving up just one hit. One bright spot in game two was the pitching of Tyler Holcombe. Holcombe threw three innings of hitless pitching, striking out three batters.
Southern Miss outscored the Blue Raiders in the series 28-3.
The Blue Raiders return to action on Tuesday as Austin Peay travels to Murfreesboro. Middle Tennessee beat Austin Peay back on March 13th 9-0.
