MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee battled back from being down four runs to beat Austin Peay 10-4 on Tuesday in Reese Smith Jr. Field.
The Governors struck first in the initial frame and again in the sixth, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. However, the Blue Raiders roared back later in the game, scoring 10 unanswered runs.
Second baseman Ryan Kemp delivered the game-tying hit in the seventh, slapping an opposite field single that scored LA Woodard and Austin Dennis.
Middle Tennessee padded an additional six runs in the eighth, taking the 10-4 lead. Drew Huff got things going with a hit back up the middle, followed by a walk to Darien Prewett.
Darrell Freeman Jr. laid down a bunt to advance the runners, but a throwing error by the Governors allowed both runs to cross the plate, giving MT the lead. Freeman Jr. scored several batters later on a sacrifice fly from Kemp.
Aaron Aucker had a productive day at the plate for the Blue Raiders, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. However, LA Woodard led all Blue Raiders, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI.
"I had some good takes, and some good at-bats," Woodard said. "But I really wanted to attack the pitches when I got what I was looking, and that was the difference."
Aucker's eighth inning homer that sealed the deal for MT was the 20th of his career.
"I was in a little bit of a drought, I think it had been two weeks exactly since my last one," said Aucker. "It was good to finally break through and get one out.
A.J Spencer got the start on the mound, his fifth of the season. The junior right-hander tossed three innings, only allowed one hit and one earned run, while striking out three of the 15 batters faced.
Zach Keenan and Tyler Holcombe threw extremely well in relief of Spencer. Keenan tossed one hitless frame, while striking out two batters.
Meanwhile Holcombe, who was the winning pitcher for the Blue Raiders, only allowed one hit in his three innings of relief.
The Blue Raiders hope to continue their momentum when they face conference opponent UTSA at home. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
