Softball Heads to TSU for Final Midweek Contst

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team plays their final midweek game of the season on Wednesday, April 25. The Raiders travel to Tennessee State for the contest, set to begin at 6pm at Tiger Field in Nashville.
The two teams have already met once this season. In that contest, the Blue Raiders came out on top, 7-1 on March 28. MT got the win behind nine strikeouts from starting pitcher Amber Baldwin. A career high for Baldwin, she threw at least one in every inning of work for her eighth victory of the year. Morgan Harris propelled the Raider offense, going 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI. Burgess also went 3-for-4, scored twice and had two RBI.
Scouting the Blue Raiders (30-18)
The Blue Raiders are coming off a 1-1 weekend versus Florida Atlantic. The Raiders won the first side of the doubleheader before rain cancelled the rubber match that was set for Sunday. In the win, Cori Jennings pitched the complete game win, her 15th of the year.
The performance earned Jennings a Tennessee Sports Writer Association Player of the Week award. She also pitched 5.1 innings in the second game of the doubleheader and got a save in the midweek contest against Belmont.
In the doubleheader with the Owls, Lexi Cushing also had a day. The sophomore hit her 12th home run of the year that broke the MT single season record for home runs. She also now leads C-USA in RBI, picking up her 39th in the series.
Summer Burgess continues to lead MT at the plate with a .371 clip, which is top six in the conference. Her mark of 59 hits is also top six in the conference.
Scouting the Tennessee State Tigers (3-41)
Tennessee State enters the midweek matchup on a 25 game losing streak, having not won since March 10 when they shutout Bowling Green, 5-0. Since facing, MT on March 27, the Tigers have been shutout five times including a 3-0 loss to No. 8 Tennessee.
Shortstop Sarah Snell is leading the team at the plate with a .278 clip while scoring a team-leading 15 runs with a double. She also has 15 stolen bases and a team-best .410 on base percentage. Katie Schneider leads the Tigers 11 RBI and nine doubles. Three TSU players have each hit two home runs on the year, including Erica O'Kane who also has seven doubles.
Lauren Powell has seen 133.1 innings in the circle for the Tigers, posting two of their three wins on the year, which were both shutouts. She has 12 complete games and has struck out 81 on the year.
