MT drops doubleheader to Marshall
4/7/2018 9:01:00 PM | Baseball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After inclement weather delayed the begin of the series, Middle Tennessee fell in both games of Saturday's doubleheader against the Marshall Thundering Herd at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
In the day's first game, the Blue Raiders lost 11-0. The Herd took the lead in the first inning, scoring two runs after consecutive hits allowed off starter Jake Wyrick.
"We picked a bad day to have a bad day, and had to play two games," said head coach Jim McGuire. "I don't think we handled (the weather) very well.
"When they got the lead it got a lot colder."
The Herd tacked on seven more runs combined in the eighth and ninth inning to put it out of reach for a rally.
Wyrick's day was cut short, allowing two runs and four hits in four innings of work.
Reliever Scheldon Paulk was effective out of the bullpen, only allowing one run and striking out two against 12 batters faced. The junior college transfer logged three innings in his relief, a season high.
MT was held in check at the plate for most of the game, only logging five hits as a team. Freshman catcher Jake Hagenow led the way, going 1-for-3 with a walk.
Fortune did not favor the Blue Raiders in game two, either. Middle Tennessee stumbled in the second contest of the day 6-4 against Marshall.
Junior RHP Carson Lester got the start on the mound in game two. Lester's first three innings were dominant, giving up no runs and one hit while striking out four.
However, Marshall got on the board in the fourth, scoring two runs on a sacrifice bunt. The Herd would not look back.
MT had several opportunities to strike back, finally breaking through in the seventh. Myles Christian led off the inning with a single, and Kevin Sullivan reached via a walk.
One batter later, junior shortstop LA Woodard ripped a double to left field to get MT on the board. They scored two more runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning to close the gap to 5-3.
The Blue Raiders had a chance to take the lead in the eighth, with the bases loaded and one out. A fielder's choice from Darrell Freeman Jr. scored one run, cutting the deficit to 5-4. But MT was not able to deliver the game winning hit.
Marshall added an insurance run in the ninth inning and MT could not rally in the bottom of the ninth.
Middle Tennessee looks to avoid the sweep in game three tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Reese Smith Jr. Field. A.J. Spencer is the projected starter on the mound for the Blue Raiders.
