TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Sophomore women's golfer Sophie Burks made a valiant run in the 103rd Women's Southern Golf Association Amateur Championship last week, finishing off the championship on Friday with a runner-up finish at NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa.
Burks fired a 3-over 74 to land in a tie for fifth in Monday's opening round before moving on to match play. As the week wore on she stayed strong with four consecutive match play wins to move into the championship round.
The Montgomery, Ala., native's wins on the week included a 1-up win against Stetson's Sarah May, a 4&3 win against Mississippi State commit Ally Williams and a 1-up win against former Montevallo golfer Arin Eddy to move into the semi-finals where she would meet Louisville golfer Delaney Shah.
Burks and Shah battled to the end before the Blue Raider sophomore sealed another 1-up win to leave her one match play win shy of the WSGA Amateur Championship title.
"Going into the week I was a little anxious about my play because I had not been in a competition setting since the Conference USA Championship, but I was pleased with my game coming out of stroke play and had a little confidence as we started match play," Burks said.
However, after a strong run throughout the week, Burks would come up just short of the title as Calynne Roshult of Cedar Park, Texas, captured the championship with a 4&3 win on Friday.
"I knew I would have to play my best to make it to the championship," Burks added. "I played two solid rounds the day before and came from behind to win both, and I was playing solid the last day but where I was making pars she was making birdies and that was the difference.
"I'm still working on some swing changes so to go 4-1 in match play is a reassurance that I'm hopefully headed in the right direction."
