Chas Narramore back at MT to begin coaching career
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – An all-time Middle Tennessee great golfer is returning to his roots for his first coaching job.
As announced by MT women's golf head coach Chris Adams, Chas Narramore, the first Blue Raider to earn an at-large berth in the men's NCAA Championships as an individual, has been hired as assistant coach.
"I'm super excited," Narramore said. "I've been contemplating getting into coaching, and this just seemed like the right time. I'm ready to settle down, be with my wife more and hopefully start a family, and we're really excited for the opportunity here.
"Coach Adams has a really good program running right now. The girls are good, and I think I'll be able to help them out a lot."
From 2005-2009, Narramore helped the Blue Raiders reach new heights on the men's side.
The three-time All-Sun Belt honoree was the first men's golfer in MT history to qualify for the NCAA Championships as an individual in 2007, the same year the team lost in a sudden death playoff in the Sun Belt Championships.
Then, in 2008, Narramore and the Blue Raiders advanced to the NCAA Championships as a team for the first time, starting a string of five straight seasons in which they played in an NCAA Regional.
After graduating in 2009, Narramore played professionally on several tours. Most notably, he played in 26 events on the PGA Tour's Web.com Tour.
With his professional career winding down, Narramore started searching for his next venture. All he knew was he wanted to be able to spend more time with his wife, Whitney.
He and former Middle Tennessee coach Whit Turnbow had numerous discussions about the transition from professional player to coach, and Narramore's interest was sparked.
All he needed was a chance, and then his alma mater and a familiar coach came calling. It was an easy fit.
"I think it's invaluable to hire somebody like Chas who's playing career speaks for itself," Adams said. "His playing ability will be a huge asset for us in terms of working with the girls on course management, and I think just having one of our own who already knows about MT, the successes we've had and how our golf programs are moving forward is immeasurable. He will be a huge part of us continuing to move forward as a program due to his knowledge and skills."
While playing professionally, Narramore was afforded the chance to hone skills he hopes to teach to Middle Tennessee's golfers.
"I've learned a lot about course management skills," he said. "I think that will come into play a lot on the women's side, and I'll be able to help them figure out how to better manage their game and put their strengths to work."
He might be new to the coaching profession, but be sure Narramore will give his all for his university once again.
"I've always wanted to come back to this place," he said. "It means a lot to me. It's an opportunity for me to give back for what I was given here."
