MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee men's basketball is set to make its first road trip of the young Conference USA season this weekend with a Thursday night contest at Southern Miss and a Saturday evening tilt at LA Tech.
In the first two conference games, the Blue Raiders have worked hard to limit opposing teams to just one shot per possession. As a team, Middle Tennessee is averaging 45 rebounds per game, the best in C-USA in league action.
James Hawthorne and Karl Gamble have led the team so far with 8.5 and 7.5 rebounds per game respectively, but Donovan Sims has rebounded exceptionally well from the guard position with 7 boards per game after a career-high nine boards against FIU.
Southern Miss entered the Conference USA season with an 8-4 record, but has fallen to 8-7 after losing its first three league contests.
The Golden Eagles have counted on double-figure performances from Cortez Edwards (14.4) and Tyree Griffin (12.8) for the majority of their offensive production, but opposing teams have found success against USM by limiting one or both of the senior guards. Griffin is especially dangerous with the ball and rarely makes mistakes as shown in his conference leading 3.6 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Though they are off to a 1-2 start in conference play, LA Tech could very easily have started their C-USA slate 3-0. After a convincing win over Southern Miss, the Bulldogs lost on the road to conference-leading North Texas by four points before falling to Rice in a game Tech led as late as the final media timeout.
LA Tech boasts an explosive offense with four of the starting five averaging 10 or more points per game and currently rank as the third-best scoring offensive in Conference USA with 77.8 points per game in league play.
The Blue Raiders and Golden Eagles tip at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday while Saturday's contest at LA Tech is slated for 4:00 p.m. Both games will be live streamed on ESPN+.
