MT visits Tennessee Friday at 6 p.m. CST
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — For the final time in the fall 2019 season, Middle Tennessee softball will hit the diamond for an exhibition contest, this time at Tennessee Friday at 6 p.m. CST.
MT will be looking to get back some momentum after suffering its first defeat of the fall on Sept. 28 against Trevecca.
Tennessee's game against the Blue Raiders will be its third game of the fall. The Lady Vols were 43-17 in 2019, wrapping up the season with a national ranking of No. 11 according to the USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll. One of those wins came in Columbia against MT, as the Raiders battled for four innings before the Tennessee offense pushed across enough runs to win in six innings.
The top returning hitter for the Lady Vols is Chelsea Seggern, who posted a .366 average in 54 starts as a junior in the spring. Kaitlin Parsons and Jenna Holcomb, who posted the third and fourth best batting average numbers, respectively, also return for another season at Tennessee. In the circle, ace Ashley Rogers returns for her sophomore year after posting a 1.94 ERA with a record of 21-7 in 39 appearances last season.
For the Blue Raiders, newcomers Juliana Lane and Mia Marinakis have stood out in the circle. Lane, a freshman out of San Diego, leads all MT pitchers in ERA (1.08) and opponent batting average (.114) while being the only Blue Raider arm to appear in all six fall games. In her first fall since transferring from Cal State Fullerton, Marinakis leads MT pitchers in innings pitched (16.0) and strikeouts (16).
On the base paths, Savannah Freeman has swiped 10 bags, and Samantha Valentine enters the weekend with a 9-9 mark in stolen base attempts. Both Blue Raiders have scored a team-best 12 runs.
Senior standout Summer Burgess still leads all Blue Raiders in batting average (.600) while starting all six games at shortstop. Freshman Kelci Hill leads her new squad in hits (11) with a .500 batting average.
