MT seeking C-USA tournament berth
MURFREESBORO, TN. – The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (6-9-1, 3-4-1 C-USA) travel to Hattiesburg, MS on Friday for a pivotal game against Southern Miss (7-8, 2-5 C-USA). Kick is set for 3 p.m.
Both teams are fighting for one of the eight tickets into the Conference USA tournament hosted by North Texas.
FIU NO MATCH FOR RAIDERS OFFENSIVE POWER
Middle Tennessee secured their third conference victory on Thursday night after defeating Florida International by a score of 3-1. The Blue Raiders had three different goal scorers on the night with Peyton DePriest, Hannah Tillett, and Maddison Falter each putting one away.
Tillett scored the first goal of the match just 15 minutes in from the penalty spot. That penalty kick goal puts Tillett at 10 for 10 for penalty kicks in her career an impressive feat that is more difficult than it seems.
That would not be the only penalty kick goal of the match for the Blue Raiders, as Peyton DePriest would get her opportunity at one just three minutes into the second half. DePriest now is just three goals back from breaking the all-time career goal record for MTSU, a record that is held by Holly Grogan with 35 goals.
Maddi Falter put the nail in the coffin in the 81' minute, scoring off a beautifully executed set piece with an assist from Hannah Tillett. That goal puts Falter at 3 goals on the season and gives Tillett her seventh assist which is tied for second in C-USA.
Not only were the offensive sparks flying for the Blue Raiders, but the defensive line played a near perfect match. Holding the Panthers to just seven shots in total compared to the 23 MT was able to fire off. FIU's lone goal came off a corner kick late in the second half.
RAIDERS' OFFENSE STRUGGLES IN LOSS TO FAU
It was a rough afternoon for Middle Tennessee who fell to conference opponent FAU 3-1 in a feisty C-USA matchup. The Blue Raiders only goal of the match came late in the second half and was scored by Freshmen midfielder MacKenzie Bonham.
Florida Atlantic played extremely aggressive and was able to gain a goal advantage early on in the first half. They could have put up more than one goal in the first half if it were not for the heroics of Senior goalkeeper Sydney Chalcraft who made a couple of miraculous saves.
Despite being outshot 12 to 3 in the first half, the Blue Raiders had their fair share of chances in the second half and were able to put up 15 shots in total, which is just one less than FAU's 16 shots.
Peyton DePriest nearly scored a fantastic breakaway goal when she was able to get behind the Owl's back line and get one on one with their keeper, however her shot would slam against the left post and be cleared away by FAU's defense.
QUICK SCOUT
The Golden Eagles are currently sitting in 12th place on the C-USA standings looking in at the hope of gaining a ticket to the tournament. In 2018, USM fell in the final to North Texas, 2-1 (OT) after taking down UAB and FAU on their way to the championship.
