MT puts up 89 points in victory
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee put on a shooting exhibition in its final exhibition game of the preseason, throttling Martin Methodist 89-63 in front of 2,139 at Murphy Center Friday.
The Lady Raiders connected on 14 3-pointers as part of their offensive arsenal against the Redhawks with Taylor Sutton and Aislynn Hayes leading the 3-point barrage with four treys each. It is the most 3-pointers in a game for Middle Tennessee since they bucketed 15 against North Texas during the 2013-14 season.
Four Lady Raiders tallied double figures, led by sophomore Anastasia Hayes with 21 points. Hayes was a stat sheet stuffer with five steals and four assists to compliment her game-high scoring honors. Freshman Aislynn Hayes also got in on the action with a 19-point performance. She, too, filled the stat sheet with an active effort that included three assists and two steals.
Charity Savage was outstanding as she narrowly missed a double-double with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, to go with her game-high nine rebounds. Savage added two assists and one steal. Taylor Sutton rounded out the double-figure scoring with 12 points. Every Lady Raider played and they all scored. Alexis Whittington just missed double figures with an eight-point outing. She also dished out four assists.
It was a sterling effort from a young Lady Raider team that comprised of one senior, three sophomores and one freshman in the starting lineup.
"I'm not sure I've ever started three sophomores and a freshman," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "This is probably the youngest team I've had since I've been at Middle Tennessee. I was very pleased with the young ladies. Our effort was better throughout for the most part. We had 70 offensive possessions and that's the most we've had in some time. There are some positives to come out of this game and some things we can really get back to practice and work on before we play a very good East Carolina team (Wednesday)."
Middle Tennessee came out strong and built a 19-11 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Lady Raiders took control in the second quarter as they piled up 27 points to take a 46-24 lead into the halftime locker room.
Rebounding was a strong suit as Middle Tennessee yanked 14 offensive caroms and 38 total boards in the game. Savage led the board game with nine rebounds and fellow senior Shakyna Payne collected seven. Courtney Whitson pulled five boards.
Middle Tennessee will open the 2019-20 campaign at East Carolina Wednesday at 10 AM.
