MT downs ODU 38-17
The Blue Raiders (4-7, 3-4) put together a strong performance on both sides of the ball and got their seniors a win on senior night 38-17 over the visiting Old Dominion Monarchs (1-10, 0-7).
Winning Saturday makes the senior class 21-8 at home in the last five years. It was also the 300th win all-time for MT at Floyd Stadium.
"It was a good win for us," Blue Raiders head coach Rick Stockstill said. "I'm really happy for our seniors that they were able to walk off that field the last time they'll ever play on it as a winner. I'm really proud of those guys.
"I didn't think we were as consistent as we needed to be in the second half offensively, but in the first half, I thought we played really well and we made some plays on both sides of the ball."
Middle Tennessee jumped ahead early and never looked back.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Asher O'Hara capped a 10-play game-opening drive with a 19-yard pass to junior Jimmy Marshall, the first of two scores the duo would combine for in the first quarter.
The Blue Raiders would then get a 57-yard passing touchdown from Chase Cunningham to Jarrin Pierce and a 6-yard rushing score from senior Terelle West in the second quarter. They took a 28-10 lead into halftime.
"It was a whole different vibe on the sideline," O'Hara said. "Everyone was together as one, and we felt really confident. … We just had a lot of fun tonight."
The 18-point lead extended to 25 in the third quarter, when redshirt junior safety Kylan Stribling picked off a pass and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown.
Crews Holt then knocked down a field goal from 46 yards, a new career high, to give MT a 38-17 lead in the fourth quarter.
It capped what was a solid night on both sides of the ball for the Blue Raiders. They gained 391 total yards while holding ODU to six for 18 on third down. They were also helped by a Monarchs turnover and 10 penalties from the road team, accounting for 120 yards.
"We played good on defense, and both sides got the job done," senior safety Jovante Moffatt said. "It was good to get some good, positive energy around the locker room."
Stribling was the standout defensively for the Blue Raiders, racking up 10 tackles to go with the pick six. Moffatt, playing in his program-record 54th career game, also had 10 tackles, becoming the eighth player in MT history with 300 in a career.
O'Hara finished with 185 yards passing, 78 rushing yards and two passing TDs to Marshall, who caught five balls for 69 yards. Pierce had four catches for 71 yards, including the 57-yard score.
A single game now remains in the 2019 season for Middle Tennessee. It'll travel to Bowling Green, Kentucky, for a rivalry matchup with WKU.
"These guys will be ready to play," Stockstill said. "They compete as hard as they can and give everything they can every snap.
"It's a big game next week, a rivalry game … and we'll enjoy this one tonight and come in here tomorrow and get ready to try and find a way to play a little better than what we played today."
