MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Blue Raiders return to Reese Smith Jr. Field for four straight days of baseball in the annual Mule Mix Classic.
Middle Tennessee (2-1) is coming off of an impressive weekend after taking two of three from Bowling Green to begin the season. The Blue Raiders pitching staff led the way, holding Bowling Green to a .154 batting average while allowing just one earned run over 27 innings.
Scouting Northern Illinois (0-4): The Huskies enter the Mule Mix Classic on a sour note, dropping all four games last weekend at Cal Baptist. LHP Eric Hedmark will get the start against the Blue Raiders. Hedmark went three innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out four in relief against Cal Baptist.
As a team, the Huskies bat just .194, and RHP Zach Keenan hopes to continue to suppress the NIU offense early. The sophomore was virtually unhittable in the season opener versus Bowling Green, going seven strong innings and giving up just two hits on his way to being named the C-USA Pitcher of the Week.
Scouting Toledo (2-1): The Rockets won two of three versus Winthrop over the weekend. The Rockets come into the Mule Mix as the best hitting team in terms of average (.296), hits (32), and on-base percentage (.389). Projected starter Peyton Wigginton had a solid outing in his first start of the season, but his pitch count rose early. The lefty however struck out seven batters and allowed just one earned run.
LHP Michael Jacob will start for Toledo on Friday. The senior was touched for 10 hits and gave up four runs in six innings of work versus Winthrop.
Scouting Western Michigan (0-3): Western Michigan was swept over the weekend by Southeast Missouri State. The Broncos open up the Mule Mix Classic against Belmont and Austin Peay, who are also looking for their first wins of the season.
The Broncos are TBA for a starter on Saturday but as a team their ERA sits at 7.88. Carson Lester is projected to get the start for Middle Tennessee. The righty held Bowling Green to just three singles across 4 2/3 innings pitched.
Scouting Bradley (2-1): The Braves come into the Mule Mix as the highest scoring team, averaging six runs per game. They also belted three home runs to help them take two of three games from Central Arkansas. Sam Lund will start Sunday for the Braves. Lund gave up seven earned runs in two innings of work, picking up the loss against Central Arkansas.
For the Blue Raiders, Lefty David Zoz is projected to get the nod for the Mule Mix finale. Zoz came in after Keenan in the season opener to secure the shutout. Zoz threw two innings, giving up no hits and striking out three.
Looking Ahead: After the Mule Mix Classic, the Blue Raiders return to action on Tuesday, February 26 to face Tennessee Tech at Reese Smith Jr. Field. The Blue Raiders will end an eight game home stand when they travel west to Memphis for a three game series beginning March 1.
