Lady Raiders advance into semis

FRISCO, Texas – Sharp shooting and contributions throughout the lineup enabled Middle Tennessee to pummel UTEP, 66-44, and advance into the semifinals of the C-USA Championships here Thursday afternoon.
Led by Alex Johnson's 17 points, three Lady Raiders registered double figures on the way to victory. Newcomer of the Year A'Queen Hayes was her usual dominant self with 11 points, seven rebounds and two assists points, while Freshman of the Year Taylor Sutton also came out strong with 13 points on the strength of three 3-pointers.
"We played pretty well today, and I am very pleased with our young ladies," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We came out shooting the ball well. I thought we were focused and it showed with our start."
Middle Tennessee (21-9) improved to 28-6 in conference tournament games under Insell, while reaching the semis for the 12th time in his 14 seasons at the helm. The Lady Raiders will face UAB in the semis Friday at 8 p.m. The teams split their regular season meetings with each winning on its home court.
"UAB is a very good basketball team," Insell said. "They have two excellent shooters in (Deanna) Kuzmanic and (Rachael) Childress, and we think (Miyah) Barnes may very well be the most underrated player in the conference. She is an outstanding player."
Middle Tennessee put itself in position for victory by scorching the nets in the opening half on the way to a 43-21 advantage at intermission. The Lady Raiders shot 47 percent (14-for-30) in the first half, including a sizzling 60 percent (6-of-10) from 3-point range.
UTEP battled but could never really cut into the Middle Tennessee as the Lady Raider defense was strong throughout. The Miners, who only hit five field goals in the first half, shot just 27 percent after connecting on 11 field goals for the game.
Jordan Majors turned in another strong all-around game for Middle Tennessee with six points, a game-high nine rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Anna Jones finished with six points and four rebounds.
The Lady Raiders were dominant on the boards, winning the rebounding battle, 43-23, led by Majors' nine caroms and seven from Hayes. Middle Tennessee also exhibited great ball movement with nine assists on 14 first-half field goals.
NOTES: MT improved to 60-22 all-time in conference tournaments, including a 9-3 mark in the C-USA Championship … MT will be appearing in the semis of a conference tournament for the 33rd time. The Lady Raiders are 22-10 in semifinal action … The Lady Raiders had three players in double figures against UTEP, improving to 19-2 when doing so.
