JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – Blue Raider sophomore Sophie Burks cruised to a bogey-free 72 Tuesday to finish the Briar's Creek Invitational with her second consecutive Top 10 finish at even par 216 (71-73-72) on the week.
"It was much cooler and the wind definitely kicked up today, so with those conditions I just tried to stay as patient as possible and take it one shot at a time trying to not get ahead of myself," Burks said. "I knew there would be holes to score on but also knew there were some that I needed to play more conservatively."
The Montgomery, Ala., native was a bright spot in a difficult week for the Blue Raiders, defeating two of the six Top 100 ranked players in the field with her stellar finish in the field of 93 golfers.
"Sophie had a great tournament this week and I'm definitely proud of her," head coach Chris Adams said. "The course played a lot tougher today and it showed in a lot of the scores."
Middle Tennessee held its spot on the final day with a 13th place finish, failing to close the gap on four ranked teams that finished just ahead of them in No. 50 Penn State (+26), No. 27 Illinois (+23), No. 45 East Carolina (+22) and No. 22 Clemson (+20).
The Blue Raiders turned in an 18-over par 306 on Tuesday to finish the week at the Golf Club at Briar's Creek at 36-over par (296-298-306=900).
Senior Hanley Long took the second spot for MT, finishing tied for 36th in the challenging field at 8-over par 224 (73-71-80).
Fellow seniors Kailey Collier and Jenna Burris scored 15-over (76-79-76) and 16-over (76-78-78), respectively, on the week while freshman Catherine Caudill logged a score of 22-over (82-76-80).
"Everyone contributed a good round this week, but we just need to get a little more consistent and avoid big numbers," Adams added. "We have a week and a half to get ready for Memphis and we are going to put in some work until then."
Middle Tennessee now faces one more test in the spring season before traveling to Fort Myers, Fla., for the Conference USA Championship in mid-April.
The Blue Raiders head west to Ridgeway Country Club to compete in the Memphis Women's Intercollegiate on April 1-2 to conclude the regular season.
