MT in second through 36 holes
Round 2 Results
GERMANTOWN, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women's golf looked strong on the opening day of the Memphis Women's Intercollegiate as they entered the clubhouse at 3-over par (289-282=571) through 36 holes.
The Blue Raiders used a 5-over par 289 in the cold and windy morning round to take the lead halfway through the day and went low in round two with a 2-under par 282, but fell behind Penn State (292-274=566) after their blistering second 18.
"It was a cold morning to get started, but overall we did a great job of coming out strong despite the conditions," head coach Chris Adams said. "It's great to have the par or better rounds that we had. Everyone contributed for us today.
"There were perfect scoring conditions in the afternoon and we really took advantage of that with a lot of birdies from Hanley, Jenna and Sophie. Penn State made a lot of birdies today and those birdies are out there, we just need to have a little more confidence with our putters and we can contend with them for the title tomorrow."
Adams led her squad to finish the day with three individuals in the Top 5 with a fourth in the Top 10 as MT sits seven strokes ahead of host Memphis (+10) on their home course.
"To have three players in the Top 5 with our individual, Caroline, playing in her first tournament of the spring and posting two great rounds today really shows the depth of our team as we head towards conference," Adams added.
Senior Hanley Long, the Raiders' stroke average leader on the season (72.8), led the way on day one and is in third place individually at 2-under par (72-68=140).
Fellow senior Jenna Burris, who finished the day with a birdie on the Par 5 second hole, sits right behind her classmate at 1-under par (71-70=141) and is in fourth place through two rounds.
Sophomore Caroline Caudill, playing as an individual in Memphis, turned in a strong first day with back-to-back even par rounds (71-71=142) leaving her in fifth place with 18 holes to go.
Sophomore Sophie Burks was the fourth Blue Raider to land in the Top 10, sitting tied for 10th at 2-over par (75-69= 144) after day one.
Senior Kailey Collier is 7-over par (74-75=149) and freshman Catherine Caudill is 8-over par (72-78=150) as the pair are tied for 20th and 28th, respectively, through 36 holes.
Middle Tennessee will once again tee off on holes one through three on day two in an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The Blue Raiders will remain paired with Penn State and Memphis for Tuesday's final round.
