LOUISVILLE, Ky. – It was an astounding opening round for Blue Raider Isabella Johnson to open the NCAA Louisville Regional. The sophomore turned in a career-low 67 (-5) Monday to sit atop the player leaderboard in just her first national appearance.
Johnson is tied with Kajsalotta Svarvar from Ole Miss and Nanami Nakashima from Kansas State at five-under par after the first round, the Blue Raider is the lowest of the individual competitors.
Kicking off the day with four-straight birdies, including a near hole-in-one on hole 12, she was rolling on her first nine, making the turn at four-under after paring the remaining five holes. Johnson's lone two bogeys of the day occurred on her back nine, but she was able to counteract them with three additional birdies for her lowest 18 score of her collegiate career.
Among tournament players, the sophomore is tied for first on the par fives, averaging 4.25 shots per hole, tied for second on total birdies, seven, and tied for third on par fours, averaging 3.8 there.
Houston and Ole Miss are tied for the lead in the team competition, with Arkansas, Xavier, Auburn and Virginia Tech rounding out the top six. At the conclusion of the event, the top five teams will advance to NCAA Championships in California, as well as the lowest-scoring individual from a non-advancing team.
Johnson is set to tee off Tuesday morning from hole 1 at 8:50 CT with BYU's Maria Jose Barragan and South Carolina's Eila Galitsky.
