Raiders Sweep FIU in Doubleheader

Murfreesboro, Tenn- The Middle Tennessee softball team defeated FIU in both games of today's doubleheader at Blue Raider Softball Stadium. The Raiders (17-15, C-USA 3-2) were lead by pitchers Amber Baldwin and Corrina Dodd, both picking up complete game wins over the Panthers (18-14, C-USA 0-5).
Ryan King got the Raiders offense started in the second inning with a sacrifice fly that plated Lexi Cushing. Brooke McClure scored on a Panther throwing error on the same play giving the Raiders an early 2-0 lead.
The Raiders were able to play small ball to extend their lead. Later in the second inning Kirstyn Cuccia bunted and reached on a fielder's choice, scoring birthday girl Claire Smith from third.
In the third inning junior Kaylyn Slatter pinch hit for Smith with the bases loaded and one out. Deep in the count Slatter blasted a pitch over the center field fence to open up the Raider lead to 7-0.
In what would be the final inning of play, Sydney Heath hit a pop-up into the left-center gap, there was some confussion between the left and center fielder though, and the ball would fall between them. Savannah Freemen scored from third and the 8-0 run rule would be complete.
Sophomore starting pitcher Amber Baldwin pitched all six innings, struck out four, did not walk a batter and did not give up a run.
Game two of the doubleheader was a pitchers duel between Raider Corrina Dodd and Panther Allison Muraskin. Both pitchers would pitch the entire game, and both threw up zeros on the scoreboard through the first four innings, but it was Freshmen Corrina Dodd that would emerge victorious, Dodd allowed one run, on three hits, and struck out five through seven innings.
In the bottom of the fifth inning Murfreesboro native Kirstyn Cuccia untied the game by pulling her third home run of the season over the right feild fence. Lani Rodriguez drove in Sydney Heath with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and the raiders would win 2-1.
The Raiders will looking for the three game sweep of FIU tomorrow at noon at Blue Raider Softball Stadium, in Murfreesboro.
