MT drops 59-57 decision to Ohio
ATHENS, Ohio – Middle Tennessee saw its season come to an end in the second round of the WNIT but not before it put together a riveting rally that fell just short in a 59-57 setback against Ohio Sunday.
A'Queen Hayes capped a sensational senior season with her 10th double-double, pouring in 17 points and yanking a career-best 15 rebounds. Anna Jones also had a strong game with 15 points on the strength of three 3-pointers. Alex Johnson finished with seven points and nine rebounds and capped her sensational career with 1,872 points, which is eighth on the all-time scoring list at Middle Tennessee.
Trailing 54-49 with 44 seconds remaining, Middle Tennessee (23-11) put together a furious comeback that saw the Lady Raiders tie the game, 57-57, on Hayes' driving layup with five seconds remaining.
"The young ladies fought and battled and gave us everything they had," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "There was no quit and that was evident in the final minutes when we battled back and got the game tied. It was really a great game between two outstanding teams. Ohio is very good. To be honest, I was surprised they didn't get an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament."
Ohio (29-5) seemed to have things in hand when Dominique Doseck connected on two free throws to put the Bobcats on top, 57-52, with 29 seconds remaining; however, the Lady Raiders weren't finished. Katie Collier drilled a 3-pointer from the corner to cut the deficit to 57-55 with 20 ticks on the clock.
Forced to foul, Middle Tennessee sent Cierra Hooks to free-throw line where she misfired on both attempts with 16 seconds remaining. Jones corralled the rebound and got the ball to Hayes, who sliced through the Ohio defense and scored the layup to tie the game, 57-57, with five seconds remaining.
Ohio called a timeout to advance the ball. The Bobcats got the ball inbounds to Hooks, who made up for the two free throw misses by converting the game-winner with three-tenths of a second remaining.
The game marked the end of the careers of seniors Hayes, Johnson, Katie Collier, LaSonja Edwards, Jess Louro and Jordan Majors.
"We will miss our seniors," Insell said. "It's been an honor to coach them. The four four-year seniors have put a lot into this program, and LaSonja and Queen have transferred in and been a big part of what we have done. They will all be successful in their future endeavors."
