LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky (9-4) used power to pull ahead of Middle Tennessee (5-8) on their way to a 4-1 victory on Friday night.
The Wildcats belted a two-run homerun in the fourth inning to give themselves the only lead they would need. They would add runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to add insurance.
"We hung in there," Head coach Jim Toman said. "But the story of the game was their pitcher."
The Blue Raider's offense faced one of the best pitcher's in the nation in Zach Thompson. Thompson went seven innings, giving up just four hits and walking none.
Brycen Thomas led Middle Tennessee offensively with two hits, including a double in the second inning. Thomas would come around to score after Myles Christian just missed a home run, flying out to right field for a sacrifice fly.
Right-hander Zach Keenan held his own through the first three innings. Keenan was nearly hitless through his first time through the lineup but found trouble in the fourth. The sophomore went six innings, giving up seven hits while striking out seven. Lefty David Zoz came in relief, throwing two scoreless innings.
The Blue Raiders return to Kentucky Proud Park tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 PM for game two of the series.
