Boca Raton, Fla.- The Middle Tennessee softball team swept FAU in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Raiders (25-17, C-USA 9-4) we're led by solid pitching from freshmen Corrina Dodd and Kailey Ahlstrom. Timely hitting from Lani Rodriguez and Jocelynn De La Cruz also helped the Raiders defeat the Owls (17-23, C-USA 4-10) in back-to-back games.
In game one, the Raiders would fall behind due to the speed at the top of the FAU lineup. C-USA stolen base leader Madisyn Palmer reached base in the bottom of the first inning, stole second, and reached third on a Raider throwing error. Palmer scored on a bunt single and the Owls jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
Sydney Heath would bring the Raiders even in the third with an RBI single, scoring Claire Smith from second base.
Although, in the bottom of the fourth inning a pair of FAU sacrifice flies put the Owls ahead 3-1.
The sixth inning would be a big one for the Raider offense as they would score five runs in the frame, three coming off an RBI double from Lani Rodriguez that broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Raiders a 6-3 lead.
"We faught back in the first game, I thought that showed some character about us," said Head Coach Jeff Breeden.
Corrina Dodd picked up her 11 win for the Raiders and her seventh complete game this season. Dodd allowed three runs, on five hits, and recorded two strikeouts.
In there last three conference wins the Raiders have had to fight their way back from an early defiset.
In game two, Jocelynn De La Cruz was the driving force for the Raider victory, recording five RBI, on three hits, two home runs, and a stolen base.
"I just needed to stop trying so hard and calm down," says De La Cruz "I was just really focused on helping my team win."
In the 9-3 win De La Cruz had a part in all but one Raider run. Along with her five RBI the sophomore also had three runs scored. The lone run that De La Cruz didn't hav a hand in was a solo shot from Lexi Cushig.
"De La Cruz had a whale of a game in the second game, she was an RBI machine," said Breeded. "I'm really proud of our kids today,we jump out in the second game to an early lead. I really thought that both of our pitchers did well. Two freshmen pitchers went the distance today. I'm just pleased with our kids. We came down here, on a business trip, and we took care of businesstwice today and we look forward to doing it again tomorrow."
Ahlstrom picked up her eighth win and her sixth complete game this season. The freshmen allowed three runs, on eight hits, and recorded six strikeouts.
The Raiders look to sweep FAU on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Not only do the Raiders look to sweep the Owls, they look to sweep both C-USA teams from the state of Florida. The Raiders swept FIU earlier this season in Murfreesboro.
After the series with FAU, the Raiders will return home to take on Western Kentucky in the "100 Miles of Hate" series, starting with a doubleheader on Friday.
